Recesselation

March 29th - April 9th, 2009
Rememberance Reception April 1, 5 – 8 p.m.
Closing Give Away April 8, 4:30-5:30 p.m.

"The Foolish Toys" will build a post-decadent shrine or memorial to our excessive past. Materials, objects, sounds, actions, and images, will be incorporated into one large sculptural form that evolves over time. Viewers are invited to leave a remembrance of things past: useless, excessive, non-essential items.

Performance by Juliana Pivato

Saturday, March 21st, 11-5pm

Coinciding with Binford Experience's exhibition and installation, Juliana Pivato will perform live a 6 hour repeated-song:

Comfort Songs: 6 hours, 3 verses, 1 chorus.

Song List: Company, Rickie Lee Jones; I Fall to Pieces, Patsy Cline; Goodbye to Love, Karen Carpenter, Don’t Worry ‘bout Me, Ella Fitzgerald, etc.

Comfort Songs is an ongoing elaboration on the performer-audience relationship. For the work, Pivato uses specific power ballads as a technologies of transformation. Through repetition, visceral transmission in song becomes flattened out, stabilized, diluted into background. Singing a cappella, real-time vulnerability enables her to situate herself with the viewer in the rupture that ultimately materializes between expectation and experience.

Juliana Pivato is currently completing an MFA in Sculpture at School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Originally from Montreal, Canada, Juliana works in a variety of media including live performance, bronze casting, drawing and sound. Since 2008 she has been hosting a weekly radio show on freeradiosaic.org entitled Songs from the Loop.

The Binford Experience: Paring Down

March 2-26, 2009
Closing reception: Thursday, March 26th 6-9p.m.

Spoke is excited to present the Binford Experience. Artists Andrew CopperSmith and Keith Skogstrom have developed an art practice where the “architect and engineer meet”. This permits the tandem to discourse on “aesthetics of function obtained via manipulation of scientific laws”. Through Skogstrom’s kinetic mechanics and CopperSmith’s push and pull structures the two create a symbiotic relationship that spurs equivocal dialog.
The Binford Experience will create an “in progress” installation. From March 2nd through March 19th, they will be working in-situ to finally complete the installation by the third week of March. The closing reception will be March 26th from 6:00 to 9:00p.m. when they will have the completed installation on view. The gallery will be open throughout the installation process, and people are invited to visit the gallery during this time. This will serve as an opportunity to interact with the artists and better understand their working process.

Please see the slideshow on the right to follow the installation progress & performance.
