What: Our Project Residency Program is geared towards projects and art practices that are
socially engaged, process oriented, participatory and multi-layered. The Project Residents can
treat the malleable project space as a laboratory, test-site, classroom, studio, experimental gallery
or social space. We encourage our residents to take time to explore and experiment without
pressure for creating a completed work or final product.
Who we are looking for: We are interested in artists or groups who will use their experience at
Spoke as a development of artist process and practice developing and rooting their projects -
people who need and want support at the very foundational core of their project or practice and
are interested in relationship building, sharing ideas and being a part of an active art community.
We are looking for artists who are interested in working within a collaborative environment and
who will open up their “residency” to the public rather than keeping this experience within the
confines of a private studio. Artists should have a need to incorporate public programming that
can include workshops, conversations, film screening, performances, etc.
About Spoke: Founded in 2008, Spoke is a multifaceted artist-run organization comprised of six
artist studios and an open space for public programming and projects. Since its inception, Spoke
has been host to collaboration and exchange through the production of innovative events,
performances, workshops, exhibitions and community-based projects. The public project space
and working artist studios are shared, which creates a strong open atmosphere and sense of
community both within and outside of the space. This unique arrangement allows for the
unexpected to occur while encouraging an open and fluid exchange of dialogue and ideas among
residents, visitors, collaborators, and the public. Spoke is dedicated to providing a place of
spontaneity, experimentation, and accessibility where a diverse range of artists and creative
individuals or groups can create, brainstorm, experiment, and develop new projects and ideas.
